ONAMIA - The Minnesota Conservation Corps Summer Youth Residential Program has been hard at work laying the foundation for a handicapped accessible trail at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park in Onamia.
Chuck Steinbauer and Curt Compton recently took top honors in the Range Bass Masters North Central money bass tournament on Serpent Lake with an 8-fish limit weighing 22 pounds, 14 ounces. Dan Quinn and Brandon Lizek placed second with a catch of 20-10 1/2 and also had the largest bass weighing 4-8. Placing third was Marv Strong and Aaron Strong with a limit weighing 19-5 1/2. The final tournament of the year will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 from the Fish Trap Lake public access. Entry fee is $60 per team with a 100 percent payback. Steinbauer wins on Whitefish Chuck Steinbauer recently won the Baxter Bass Snatchers' fourth tournament of the year on the Whitefish Chain. His winning weight of 14 pounds, 14 ounces included the tournament lunker which weighed 4-4. Guy Henkensiefken placed second with a catch of 13-10 and third place went to Dennis Lothspeich at 12-13. There were 130 fish caught and released. Average fish size was 11-14. Bough workshops offered Balsam bough harvesters, bough buyers and wreath makers have an opportunity to learn more about harvesting techniques, laws and related issues during September workshops hosted by the Minnesota Balsam Bough Partnership. The workshops will cover the techniques of bough harvesting and delivery; areas for harvesting; the outlook for 1999; public land permit compliance, cost and enforcement; and balsam ecology, including the impact of tree diseases. There is no cost for the workshops, nor is registration required. Workshops are scheduled for: - Cloquet, Tuesday, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., at the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center.
