The Purge

Now Playing Synopsis: A family living in a gated community fight to defend their home against vicious attackers during the one night each year when all crime is legal in this high-concept thriller from writer/director James DeMonaco (Staten Island). In the not-too-distant future, rampant crime and prison overcrowding have inspired the U.S. government to implement a unique solution to restore the peace: Each year, for a 12-hour period, any and all crime becomes permissible as police put their jobs on hold, and hospitals close their doors. It's called the Purge, and remarkably, the annual event leads to drastically reduced crime and record-low unemployment levels throughout the rest of the year. But this year, as suburban parents James (Ethan Hawke) and Mary (Lena Headey) place their home on lockdown for the annual event, a desperate man finds his way into their neighborhood while fleeing a sadistic gang of masked killers. In a moment of compassion, James and Mary's adolescent son (Max Burkholder) unlocks the door, offering sanctuary to the frightened stranger. Unfortunately for the entire family, that act of kindness may also be their very last, because now the killers who were pursuing the man have surrounded the house, and have vowed to kill everyone inside unless they are willingly given the man they are hunting within an hour. As the clock begins to tick, the family face a difficult dilemma -- do they sacrifice the life of a stranger in hopes of saving themselves, or attempt to stand their ground until the Purge expires? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Cast: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane Movie Details Play Trailer Buy Tickets Movie Review

The Hunt

Opens Friday, Jul 12, 2013 Synopsis: A child's lie threatens to destroy the life of a divorced day-care worker attempting to reconnect with his teenage son in this emotionally charged drama from director Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration, Submarino). In the wake of a fractured marriage, 40-year-old Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen) gets a new girlfriend and a new job in a day-care center while fighting to win custody of his teenage son. Lucas is a respected figure in his close-knit community, and the kids at the center where he works all look up to him. When Lucas repeatedly finds young Klara (Annika Wedderkopp) roaming the streets alone as her parents engage in angry shouting matches, he becomes something of a protector to the frightened young girl, often walking her home once the arguments have died down. When Klara attempts to repay Lucas' kindness with a kiss on the lips, the shocked teacher quickly corrects her by telling her that such a display of affection is not appropriate. Upset over being rebuffed by the man she so admires, Klara responds by telling the inexperienced manager of the day-care center that she saw Lucas engaged in inappropriate activity. Before long the rumor has caught fire, and as Christmas approaches mob mentality prevails. Everyone close to Lucas, including his two best friends and his son, quickly become pariahs in the community. Meanwhile, the desperate Lucas wages a losing battle to reclaim his dignity in a town that would sooner see an innocent man crucified than admit their mistake. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrom, Susse Wold Movie Details Play Trailer Buy Tickets Movie Review

Violet & Daisy

Now Playing Synopsis: Two young women have a very unusual after-school job in this dark-hued comedy-drama. Teenagers Violet (Alexis Bledel) and Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) are best friends and share a passion for dresses from Barbie Sunday (Cody Horn), a well-known designer with a youthful style. Paying for those dresses can be expensive, so Violet and Daisy work to make some pocket money -- they're hired killers for Russ (Danny Trejo), who doles out assignments requiring their impressive skills with firearms and the "internal-bleeding dance" (which involves jumping up and down on their victims). Russ has instructed Violet and Daisy to knock off Michael (James Gandolfini), and gives them the location of his apartment and the time he should be home. However, though the gals arrive at the expected time, Michael does not, and while waiting for him to show up, they fall asleep. When they awake, they discover Michael is a seemingly nice guy who treats his unexpected guests with courtesy and kindness, and they're soon caught up in divided loyalties between their boss and their target. Violet & Daisy is the first directorial effort from Geoffrey Fletcher, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for the film Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel, James Gandolfini, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Danny Trejo Movie Details Play Trailer Buy Tickets Movie Review
